Two weeks ago I gave you some insight into our chicken pasturing process. You remember that gypsy cart? Well, last week we towed the gypsy cart, complete with 11 bewildered hens, down to Slippery Rock University’s quad and set the chickens out to pasture. What did we hope to accomplish by doing this? We wanted people to ask questions, start conversations, and even talk to our egg laying hens. Mission accomplished. We had great discussions with students, faculty and staff about the industrial food system versus local, organic food choices. We were even challenged by individuals to explain why we believed in local, organic food. Time and time again, the conversation moved from partisanship to the common ground of healthy food, healthy farms, taste, people working and making money and less environmental impact. I believe that many of the folks we interacted with took a second look at their dinner that evening. Hopefully, they used some of the information we provided to make some local food choices. We also saw many of our new friends later that evening at our screening of Food Inc.
Our University and our community have the power to vote with dollars and choose local, organic food as a standard, not an occasional in our grocery stores and dinning halls. If this issue is important to you then leave a comment for AVI or email the Giant Eagle. And if they don’t listen find better ways to spend your money. Vote with your dollar!!!
