SR Farmer's Market done for the Season

The Slippery Rock Farmers’ Market is done for the season! Our last market was on Halloween and while the weather did not cooperate we had fun making apple cider, painting pumpkins, and dressing up (see photos). The 2009 market season was a success, with 41 different vendors participating and over 2000 customers. The local food movement it alive and well in Slippery Rock! Even though the leaves have fallen and winter is approaching local food is still available through the Northwest Pennsylvania Grower’s Co-op Winter Market. You can purchase local veggies, meats, eggs, and dairy through the co-op’s online store all winter. If you are interested, check out their website www.nwpagrowers.com for more information.

The gardens at the Macoskey Center are being put to bed for the winter. Cover crops have been planted and the garlic is nestled in under a layer of straw. We still have a few greens growing under cover and the greenhouse has been planted with lettuce and spinach for winter salads. We will be participating in the Winter Market when we have produce available.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the Slippery Rock Farmers’ Market either as vendors or customers. My job here at the Macoskey Center wouldn’t be nearly as rewarding without you!
